Advocating in Washington, D.C.
Meeting with congressional offices and using student voices to shape public policy.
Why It Mattered
This trip showed me that meaningful change is often driven by ordinary people who choose to get involved. Before traveling to Washington, D.C., policy felt shaped by institutions disconnected from everyday life. Meeting directly with congressional offices helped me understand how individual stories, preparation, and proactivity can influence the way issues are understood and addressed. It reinforced my belief that sharing our lived experiences is one of the most powerful ways to create change.
What Happened
Through meetings with representatives and congressional staff, I discussed issues affecting students, particularly from immigrant communities, while learning how policy is shaped. Preparing for these meetings required research, collaboration, and careful communication. The experience pushed me to think beyond my own perspective and reflect on how public policy influences nearly every aspect of our lives.
What I Learned
I left Washington with a stronger sense of responsibility. The trip taught me that meaningful impact requires more than good intentions-it requires proactivity, commitment, and the courage to speak up even when it seems hopeless. It reinforced the importance of advocacy as a bridge between communities and their leaders.
